I've done it a million times in XP, and after I restart, everyhting's fine. A recent hardware or software change might be the case. The heat loosened the lubricant and allowed it to spin up. I need to find a way to make sure the PC boots from the HDD every time. the fastest way is = ctrl+alt delete,start task manager, new task, type, explorer.exe and voila.
