svchost ate up the CPU when I checked for updates, but updates were found a minute later, so everything's good now. This worked for me with the KB905474 update hopefully it will help you. However, now it's telling me to download Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) -- and that's a different name. - Norton was not possible - they want me to download and install and separate each part into groups of a small amount - not safe.
- I checked Task Manager, and found out that one of the svchost's was hogging the CPU.

- I had the same problem with Genuine Windows Update KB905474 freezing and using 100% CPU.
Once installed, WGA Notifications becomes a permanent part of user’s Windows XP system, and cannot be uninstalled. The other systems that have been updated to Internet Explorer 8 do not experience the issue. It does no harm to your computer so it's safe to install . This only happened every second tuesday of these last two months, that is, Patch Tuesday.
None of the options seemed to work for me. Users will not have the option of uninstalling WGA Notifications. Check This Out This time, I tried using the 'Express' option. I reviewed my update history. WGA was installed awhile ago succesfully. But I already have the VALIDATION TOOL from Feb., right?
